Believe it or not, this isn't posed. My sister and her friend were messing around, taking a break from filming some cooking project from school (hence the video camera and the apron). The halogen lamps were out for lighting, which created the intense shadows. It look me a long time to get this to where I liked it (it was taken in March).
Looking back, this photo has so many amazing coincidences that relate to light and dark, hot and cold, in it-- the girls' hair color, the color of their clothes, and their positions.

Excellent piece of photography. As much as a fair amount of the final piece is a result of luck, I give you kudos on your sense of composition and as you mentioned, your interest in perfecting it. Coincidences make the world go 'round.
